Birchwood Outreach Fund

The Mission
The Birchwood Outreach Fund was formed in 2010 by a group of individual members of the Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club, with the specific objectives of helping local charities and demonstrating Birchwood's commitment to Harbor Springs and the surrounding communities.
Who It Supports
The guiding philosophy of the Birchwood Outreach Fund is to "acknowledge a need and fill it". Unfortunately, filling the many needs is a major challenge here in northern Michigan as there are many local families, seniors and children that are so less fortunate than Birchwood members, and in fact, live in extreme poverty.

The specific charities the Birchwood Outreach Fund supports are recommended by a nine member governing Board consisting of Nancy Baity, Ron Baldwin, Bill Borglin, Jeff Higgs, Steve Judd, Christine MacKenzie, Bob Peterson, Linda Riley and Gail Torreano, with input accepted from all donors. The Fund has considered more than 30 requests for funding from organizations within the Harbor Springs area and with its limited resources, has been able to support a number of these worthwhile programs.

Although part of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, the Birchwood Fund's Advisory Committee specifies exactly to which charities in the Harbor Springs area it will support each year....with recommendations made by its donors.

The Fund Committee, with input from its donors, is pleased to announce those local charities and organizations that will receive donations/grants for the 2016-2017 fiscal year from your Birchwood Outreach Fund (BOF).

o Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan
Access to mental and behavioral health services is the “most unmet need” among children in foster care. This grant will help provide up to 100 hours of free counseling to those engaged in foster care in Emmet County.

o North Country Community Mental Health
A welcoming, clean and professional atmosphere where persons can socially interact is essential for recovery from mental illness, substance abuse and/or intellectual disabilities. This grant will help create a home-like setting for those in residential treatment.

o Kids Against Hunger – Key Club – Harbor Springs High School
This is a youth organization that pays for, and packs, meals for those in need. A portion of these meals will be delivered to the local Manna Food Project, a portion to disaster relief organizations within the USA and a portion to starving children and families around the world.

o Manna Food Project
This grant helps Manna to purchase protein food, which is needed to support the dietary needs of hungry families in Emmet County.

o Manna “Backpack” Program
The Fund continues to support this program which provides food for needy Harbor Springs Public Elementary School children to eat over the weekend – many of these children eat only the food provided to them during school hours!

o Bay Bluffs Emmet County Medical Care Facility
Music can help those with severe dementia to calm chaotic brain activity, enabling the listener to focus on the present and regain a connection to others. Bay Bluffs is a provider of “Music & Memory” and this grant will help purchase the equipment and music necessary to offer the program to its dementia-affected residents.

o Harbor Hall
Harbor Hall is including holistic approaches to the mind and body for its clients that struggle with addiction and consequently self-esteem and physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. This grant will help provide a wellness instructor who can provide the services of yoga instruction and dietary education.

o North Country Kids Day Care
North Country Kids, a non-profit daycare and preschool, is undergoing a refresh of its facility, furniture and materials. This grant will support the purchase of room dividers, toy bins, and art supplies to create a comfortable atmosphere for the children and ensure licensing requirements are met.
