Birchwood Outreach Fund

The Mission
The Birchwood Outreach Fund was formed in 2010 by a group of individual members of the Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club, with the specific objectives of helping local charities and demonstrating Birchwood's commitment to Harbor Springs and the surrounding communities.

Who It Supports
The guiding philosophy of the Birchwood Outreach Fund is to "acknowledge a need and fill it". Unfortunately, filling the many needs is a major challenge here in northern Michigan as there are many local families, seniors and children that are so less fortunate than Birchwood members, and in fact, live in extreme poverty.

The specific charities the Birchwood Outreach Fund supports are recommended by a nine member governing Board consisting of Nancy Baity, Ron Baldwin, Bill Borglin, Jeff Higgs, Steve Judd, Christine MacKenzie, Bob Peterson, Linda Riley and Gail Torreano, with input accepted from all donors. The Fund has considered more than 40 requests for funding from organizations within the Harbor Springs area and with its limited resources, has been able to support a number of these worthwhile programs and projects.

Although part of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, the Birchwood Fund's Advisory Committee specifies exactly to which charities in the Harbor Springs area it will support each year....with recommendations made by its donors.

The Fund Committee, with input from its donors, is pleased to announce those local charities and organizations that will receive donations/grants for the 2017-2018 fiscal year from your Birchwood Outreach Fund (BOF).

o Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan
Access to mental and behavioral health services is the “most unmet need” among children in foster care. This grant will help provide counseling to low income families and children in foster care in Emmet County, facing significant trauma or at a point of crisis in their lives.

o Kids Against Hunger – Key Club – Harbor Springs High School
This is a youth organization that pays for, and packs, meals for those in need. These meals will be delivered to the local Manna Food Project, to help support the needs of hungry families in Emmet County.  For more information on the Kids Against Hunger project, please click here to read an article from Birchwood's winter edition of Country Life.

o Manna Food Project
This grant helps Manna to purchase protein food, which is needed to support the dietary needs of hungry families in Emmet County.

o Manna “Backpack” Program
The Fund continues to support this program which provides food for Harbor Springs Public Elementary School children in need, to eat over the weekend – many of these children eat only the food provided to them during school hours!

o Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity
This grant helps low income households make critical home repairs. The program prioritizes applicants based on financial need as well as the nature and gravity of the repair as it relates to the household’s immediate safety, health and wellness

o The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army offers fellowship, providing hot nutritious Friday night dinners to the homeless, low income families and recovering addicts. This grant helps support the purchase of catered food to serve at these weekly dinners.

o Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Foundation
This organization is launching “Bay Connect” making reliable transportation available to our local seniors, offering both group shuttles and individual rides. The Fund’s grant will support Bay Connect start up costs.

Two for One
The Birchwood Outreach Fund provides the opportunity to make a real impact throughout the community Birchwood members love and aspires to grow the voluntary donor base to include 100% of Birchwood Members. The Fund's vision is to bring Birchwood members together, completing the Birchwood experience by both enhancing Birchwood's reputation throughout the area and by giving our donors an opportunity to affect positive change in Harbor Springs through the selfless experience of giving. What is unique about Birchwood Outreach Fund is your contribution has two benefits; it builds an enduring legacy as the fund grows and immediately pays for essential services. Two for one!

What Level of Support has the Birchwood Outreach Fund Received?

The BOF thanks all those Birchwood members who have donated to the Fund.  However, if the Fund is to continue its great work in helping local charities and demonstrating Birchwood's commitment to Harbor Springs and the surrounding communities, it needs higher participation from our Birchwood members. If you have not yet been able to contribute to the Fund, we ask that you please consider a donation in 2018.
Is My Donation Tax Deductible?
Please join your Birchwood friends, families and neighbors to support your community with your tax deductible contribution. The Fund is a component of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, an established 501(c)3 organization.
